The Wellness Approach to Aging

There’s something incredibly comforting about the way Nurse Niki approaches women’s wellness and aging. In a space that can often feel overwhelming or overly focused on quick fixes, she brings a much more thoughtful perspective-one rooted in education, prevention and helping women feel confident through every stage of life. Originally from Las Vegas, Niki Capobianco’s path into healthcare was shaped through deeply personal experiences that ultimately changed the direction of her career. After her son was born prematurely and spent time in the NICU, she found herself inspired by the nurses who cared for him during one of the most emotional times in her life. Years later, shortly after relocating to Boston with her family, her husband was diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Supporting him through treatment gave her an even deeper appreciation for patient care and reinforced her desire to pursue nursing in a more meaningful way.

Today, as a board-certified nurse practitioner at The Look Med Spa, Niki has become known for her ability to connect internal wellness with the physical changes many women begin experiencing as they age. Her work focuses heavily on helping women navigate hormone-related changes, inflammation and overall wellness through a more personalized and comprehensive approach to care. What makes Niki’s approach stand out is the way she simplifies topics that many women have quietly struggled to understand for years. Rather than focusing only on surface-level treatments, she believes in helping patients better understand what may be happening internally first. In her conversation on The Beauty Vault Podcast, Niki shares her perspective on aging, hormones and women’s wellness while discussing the treatments and preventative approaches.

A lot of women begin noticing major changes in their skin, energy, weight, and overall well-being during perimenopause, but many still feel confused or dismissed. What are some of the most common signs you see that hormones may be affecting someone long before they realize it themselves?

One of the biggest things I see is women feeling like they are “not themselves,” but they cannot always pinpoint why. It may start subtly with fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, mood changes, anxiety, irritability, low motivation or feeling more overwhelmed than usual. Physically, many women notice weight gain or body composition changes, especially around the midsection, even when they have not changed their diet or lifestyle. They may also notice more inflammation, joint aches, lower libido, hair thinning, dry skin, acne, changes in their menstrual cycle, night sweats or just feeling like their skin and face look more tired or dull. What is frustrating is that a lot of women are told their labs are “normal” or that these symptoms are just part of aging, stress, or being busy. But often, these changes are connected to shifts in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid function, insulin, cortisol and overall metabolic health. My goal is to help women understand that their symptoms are real and that there is usually a reason their body is feeling different.

The neck is often one of the first areas where people begin noticing signs of aging. What types of treatments, skincare, or preventative approaches do you typically recommend to help maintain the skin and support aging in that area?

The neck is definitely one of those areas that can show aging early because the skin is thinner and often gets less attention than the face. Prevention is huge. I always recommend treating the neck as an extension of the face, which means daily sunscreen, medical-grade skincare, hydration and consistent use of products that support collagen, texture and skin quality. Depending on the patient’s concerns, I may recommend treatments like biostimulants, skin boosters, microneedling or collagen-stimulating treatments, lasers, BBL, radiofrequency, or other skin-tightening modalities. We also recently brought in an exciting new device called OndaPro, which is designed for skin tightening and body contouring and I am really looking forward to incorporating it into my treatment plans for patients who are good candidates. One of my favorite neck treatments is the Radiesse “Gold” protocol, which combines Radiesse, Belotero and neuromodulator together to improve the appearance of neck lines, skin texture and overall skin quality. I love this treatment because patients can see an immediate improvement, but the results continue to build over about 8 weeks as collagen stimulation improves the skin. Results typically last around 12 months, depending on the patient’s skin, lifestyle, and overall treatment plan. I also think it is important to look at the patient as a whole. Skin quality is not just about what we put on the skin or what device we use. Hormones, nutrition, protein intake, hydration, inflammation, sun exposure and lifestyle all play a role in how the skin ages. The best results usually come from combining good skincare, in-office treatments and internal wellness support.

You mentioned during the podcast how important proper testing and individualized wellness plans can be, especially as hormones and metabolism begin changing. Why do you think it’s so important for people to understand what’s happening internally before simply jumping into trends or treatments?

I think testing is so important because symptoms can overlap and guessing can lead people down the wrong path. Weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, anxiety, low libido and skin changes can be related to hormones, thyroid, insulin resistance, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, gut health, cortisol, or a combination of several things. There are so many wellness trends right now, and while some can be helpful, they are not always appropriate for every person. What works for one person may not work for someone else, especially if their hormones, metabolism, thyroid, or nutrient status are different. When we test and look at the full picture, we can create a plan that is actually individualized instead of just chasing symptoms. It allows us to be more intentional with hormone support, nutrition, supplements, weight loss medications, skincare and aesthetic treatments. I also feel like annual treatment plans are one of the best approaches because they allow us to create realistic goals, prioritize what will make the biggest impact and build results gradually over time. This helps patients achieve results that look natural, balanced and refreshed instead of overdone. Then, once we get them where they want to be, we can shift the focus to maintenance. My approach is always to help patients understand what is happening inside their body so we can support them in a way that feels safe, realistic, natural and sustainable.
