There are certain people in this industry who leave an impression on you immediately, and Gabriella Price is one of them. I was thrilled to sit down with Gabriella on The Beauty Vault Podcast, but what stood out to me most wasn’t just her impressive knowledge of skin and skincare products, it was her heart. Before we ever recorded, we spent quite a bit of time talking, and I quickly realized that Gabriella is exactly who she presents herself to be: deeply compassionate, incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely invested in helping people feel confident in their skin.

As the founder of PurefectionLA in Toluca Lake, Gabriella has built a reputation for taking a clinical meets realistic approach to skincare. Like so many skincare professionals, her journey began with her own struggles. After years of battling acne and searching for solutions, she discovered what would become a lifelong passion for skin health and product formulation. She often credits Marini Skin Solutions as the brand that ultimately transformed her skin and helped inspire her professional path. Interestingly, it was her husband’s encouragement that led her to pursue her aesthetics license, a decision that would ultimately change the course of her life. Today, she lives by a philosophy she coined herself: “Obsession leads to success.”

1. You often talk about “Functional Skin Therapy.” For someone hearing that term for the first time, what does it mean and how is it different from the way most people approach skincare today?

Functional Skin Therapy is a clinical approach I created over years of suffering with my own skin imbalances, searching for guidance to understand and regulate my own skin health. Functional Skin Therapy is an integrative approach to aesthetics, somewhere between a spa experience and Functional medicine. It’s an approach that looks beyond surface-level symptoms and focuses on understanding why the skin is behaving the way it is. Rather than chasing individual concerns like acne, pigmentation, redness or aging with the latest trending product, we evaluate the skin as a living organ that is influenced by barrier function, inflammation, lifestyle, environment, hormones and overall health.

Most people approach skincare reactively, they see a breakout and buy an acne product, or they notice pigmentation and buy a brightening serum. Functional Skin Therapy takes a more investigative approach. We identify the root causes contributing to skin dysfunction, then create a personalized plan that restores balance and supports long-term skin health. At PurefectionLA, our goal isn’t just to improve skin temporarily. We want to educate clients, strengthen the skin’s ability to function optimally, and help them achieve results that last. We focus on educating people, this is the most crucial step in the clearing and balancing process. We are retraining clients out of improper habits and to begin to truly understand what their skin is telling them.

2. With so much attention on trending ingredients, how do you determine which products actually work well together and what mistakes do you see people making when they build their own skincare routines?

I am a consumer just like everyone else and I am always excited to get my hands on and test every single new innovation that comes out. Years of experience and testing different ingredients and formulas together on different skin types, as well as on myself, has helped me form our curated technique. We are constantly learning and testing to ensure we are up to date with advancements. I always say the products we use in a routine are our tools to fill in the gaps where your skin is lacking support. Think of each piece of a routine as a supplement. Our skin receives most of its nutrients from the exterior, it does not have blood vessels that reach the outermost layer, the epidermis, so when we are deficient in something we need to provide it much like we do if we are deficient internally. When we are depleted of a nutrient we take supplements or make sure to get more of it from our foods to balance our system. Skincare is the same thing.

The skincare industry has created a culture where people collect ingredients rather than build effective routines. Trends are a skin professionals worst nightmare. We don’t use certain ingredients because they helped someone else, we plug them into a routine to fill unique gaps we find in their skins health. An ingredient isn’t good or bad on its own, its effectiveness depends on the person’s skin, the formulation, the concentration and what else they’re using alongside it. When I’m designing a routine, I’m looking at how products work together to support the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and move the client toward their specific goals. The routine has to function as a system, not a collection of individual products.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people making is under supporting their skin because they think it is ‘sensative’. We do not subscribe to that nonsense. Our skin quite literally functions as our shield and it is the only organ outside of our body protecting all the others. It is strong and just needs to be properly supported to do its job. As it’s under supported and weakened by oxidative stressors and internal imbalance we need to counteract those aspects to bring it back to homeostasis.

Another mistake we see over and over again are overusing hydrating products because you believe your skin is dry when they actually are not assisting their exfoliation effectively to help the skin retain hydration and balance. This trend is causing a lot of yeast overgrowth issues that lead them to use more products that are only going to make the issue worse. The most effective skincare routines are often surprisingly simple. Some clients come in with many amazing products that they are just utilizing incorrectly so with some reworking of their routine and a bit of guidance in those cases we see amazing results that simply. When products are chosen strategically and work synergistically, clients usually see better results with less irritation and far less frustration.

3. When a new client sits in your chair, what are some of the first things you’re evaluating that they may not even realize are affecting their skin?

Most clients expect me to focus only on what I can see on the surface, but I’m evaluating much more than that. I always start by asking a bunch of questions to try to get a feel for how a patient views their skin and how they experience it on a daily basis. Most new patients will use all the wrong terms so we often read between the lines to understand what the skin is actually saying. For example, if someone says they are dull and need brightening, they most likely need proper exfoliation and their cell turn over sped up. Or if they describe their skin as oily, 9 out of 10 times they are actually very dehydrated and under supporting their barrier causing certain things to be overactive. I also love to ask about their history with treatments and the outcome they experienced that tells me a lot about what their skin is lacking. Aside from the many questions, physically I’m looking at signs of barrier dysfunction, inflammation patterns, hydration levels, healing capacity, sensitivity and how the skin is communicating what’s happening internally & externally.

Then of course I’m also asking questions about lifestyle factors that people don’t always connect to their skin; stress levels, sleep quality, diet, digestion, medications, supplements, makeup, exercise habits, hormone fluctuations and even how & when they use their skincare products at home.

One thing I’ve learned is that skin rarely exists in isolation. The breakout, pigmentation, redness or accelerated aging someone is experiencing is often a symptom of a larger story. That’s why consultation and education are such important parts of our process. The more complete picture we have, the more effectively we can create a treatment plan that produces meaningful, lasting results. Ultimately, I’m not just evaluating the condition of the skin, I’m evaluating the health of the skin and its ability to function the way it was designed to.
