What questions should every patient ask during a consultation before moving forward with treatment?

Most patients come into a consultation with an idea of what they’d like to have done or an area they’d like to treat. They might ask about specific brands used, pricing, and other details. While those things can be important, what matters most is the expertise and training of your injector. Ask your provider to give you a comprehensive consultation, ideally a full-face assessment. They should be able to discuss your anatomy and explain what contributes to aging or a specific aesthetic concern. Additionally, ask whether they have the resources on hand and, more importantly, know how to use them-to manage a medical complication should one occur. Complications are rare, but they can be serious. It’s very important for both providers and patients to take the “medical” in “medical aesthetics” seriously because, if a complication happens to you, you’ll appreciate having someone who is knowledgeable and prepared far more than saving $50 to $100 on your treatment. One misconception is that patients think a single treatment is going to solve everything.

How do you help patients understand the difference between a quick fix and a long-term treatment plan?

Most people have something specific that concerns them or makes them feel insecure. It’s not unusual for a patient to come in focused on a particular issue-dark under-eyes, jowling, smile lines and believe that treating that one concern will solve all of their problems. However, the reality is that those larger concerns are often created by a combination of other, less obvious factors. It’s my job as an injector to provide a thorough consultation and help each patient understand their face and which treatments will and will not benefit them. More often than not, achieving the desired result requires more than one syringe of filler, more than one type of treatment, and more than one session. Similar to how people maintain their hair, nails, lashes or any other beauty service that requires ongoing upkeep, the same applies to injectables. Not only do products naturally metabolize over time, but all of us continue to age and change. A long-term treatment plan acknowledges that reality and evolves with it.

Social media has made a lot of people either want filler or become afraid of filler. What separates a face that looks refreshed from a face that looks overfilled?

There are two separate points to address in response to this question. First, I recognize that I am a professional working in the aesthetic industry and that it is in my best interest for patients to be excited about filler. With that said, I believe it is very important that patients seek information and education about filler or any medical product, for that matter-from professionals who study, use and understand it. I’ve learned about plenty of things from influencers online, but it’s important to remember that what you see and hear is their experience. Perhaps their filler migrated. They may have received a product that wasn’t appropriate for their face, been treated with a less-than-optimal technique, or had an injector who never said no and placed too much product at the patient’s request. This happens often with lips. When my patients bring concerns they hear about on social media, it’s my job to educate them using the best available evidence and information. With regard to dermal filler, studies (and my own personal practice) indicate that FDA-approved fillers are safe and, when approached with a holistic understanding of the individual patient, can produce beautiful, natural and virtually undetectable results.

Second, it’s not necessarily the number of syringes that makes someone appear overfilled or puffy. It’s the type of product selected, along with how and where it’s placed. I always recommend looking at the face of the provider who is treating you. If they appear overfilled, there’s a good chance they’re comfortable creating the same look for their patients. There’s a great deal of artistry involved with injecting. Choose your provider wisely.
